Peace Rally held in Kathmandu for Secular Nepal

September 7, 2015

Kathmandu – A large group of Nepali people held a peace rally in Kathmandu yesterday advocating a secular Nepal. They also protested the attempt of re-turning Nepal into a Hindu State. In drafting the new Constitution of Nepal, the vested group in the Government has been attempting to re-turn Nepal a Hindu State again against the will of diverse religious communities of Buddhism, Christianity, Muslim, and Kirat. The protestors advocated the importance of retaining Nepal a secular State for equal respect to all the religions in Nepal. The peace rally started from Bhrikuti Mandapa (an exhibition park) in the capital city at 11:00 a.m. marched up to the International Convention Hall in Baneswar, where they staged a sit-in program. Thousands of people belonging to several religious schools of Nepal displayed many placards that read "We want secularism." "No to mono religion policy." "We shall not accept the new constitution without secularism." "Down with the Hindu State."

Nepal, the birthplace of the Buddha and a nation of diverse nationalities was declared a “Hindu State” in the 1960 Constitution by the then Hindu ruler. After several mass protests in 1990 and 2006 against the discrimination by the Hindu domination, an interim Constitution in 2007 declared Nepal a secular federal state of inclusive democracy.

However, since the return of Nepali Congress and Nepal Communist Party (UML) parties to power in 2013, the vested group has been re-attempting to turn Nepal back to Hindu country again. The Hindu State in the past has discriminated other religious communities in Nepal. The Dharmodaya Sabha and many other religious groups belonging to Buddhist, Christianity, Muslim and Kirat have advocated a secular Nepal that will provide equal respect to all religions in Nepal

Dharmodaya Sabha - The National Buddhist Organization & Nepal Regional Center of the World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB)

The Dharmodaya Sabha was established in 1944 in Benaras, Saranth, India to protest against the expulsion of five Buddhist monks from Nepal, the country where Lord Buddha was born in 623 B.C., by the then Rana prime minister of Nepal. The family regime of the Rana was the most undemocratic and autocratic family of the Rana. It was gross unjustice to expel the Buddhist monks from Nepal known in the history of Nepal as the land of the Buddhas as mentioned in the Swayambhu Purana of Nepal.  More
